Basketball Recap: Woodland Comes Up Short

Woodland lost against Sutter back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Woodland Wolves took a 55-40 bruising from the Sutter Huskies. While losing is never fun, the Wolves can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1192nd, while the Huskies are ranked 444th).

When it comes to explaining why Woodland lost, don't look at Mayte Leon Perez. Despite the final result, she went 6 of 11 on her way to 20 points and seven boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Madilyn Watkins, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Woodland smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 24 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Torrence Harter was her usual excellent self, dropping a triple-double on 33 points, 15 boards, and ten steals for Sutter. Harter is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 54 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Jamie Haase, who posted nine points and five rebounds.

Woodland has been struggling recently as they've lost 12 of their last 13 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-18 record this season. Their recent woes sure aren't a result of their performance when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy: their three-point shooting accuracy was 32.2% in those games and 21.2% outside of them. As for Sutter, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-9 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Woodland will host Natomas at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Sutter, they will welcome Rio Linda at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (Sutter has won five straight at home, while Rio Linda won eight straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
