Baseball Recap: Leadership Public Schools Richmond Comes Up Short

Leadership Public Schools Richmond lost against Mare Island Tech Academy back in March, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Pumas fell 14-9 to the Griffins. The Pumas' defeat continues a trend for the team, making it four in a row.

Rene Lopez and Mateo Velazquez put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Lopez tossed 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run but no hits. Meanwhile, Velazquez pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Lopez has become a key player for Leadership Public Schools Richmond: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 2-5 otherwise. At bat, Lopez scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in two of his five plate appearances, while Velazquez got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. That triple was Velazquez's first of the season.

In other batting news, Brian Martinez made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Leadership Public Schools Richmond is 4-1 when Martinez posts two or more runs, but 0-5 otherwise. Noah Quijada also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Leadership Public Schools Richmond's loss dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Mare Island Tech Academy, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 6-6.
