Portola is 1-9 against Quincy since May of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Tigers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Trojans at 4:00 p.m.
On Thursday, Portola didn't have quite enough to beat Plumas Charter and fell 6-4. That's two games in a row now that the Tigers have lost by exactly two runs.
Emery Powell was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He struck out seven batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. Powell was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.

Powell wasn't the only one making solid contact as seven players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Joe Leal, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Leal has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Quincy ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They skirted past Portola 11-9. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Like Portola, Quincy also got a great game from a two-way player: Nathan Schmid. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Schmid also tossed no walks, which is notable because Quincy is 5-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 4-5 otherwise. Schmid was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Jake Thackeray was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 4-for-5. Quincy is undefeated when Thackeray posts one or more home runs, but 6-7 otherwise. Noah Wade was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
Quincy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They are 6-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
This is the second loss in a row for Portola and nudges their season record down to 5-11. Even worse, they were so close both times: the defeats came by an average of only two runs. As for Quincy, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 9-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Portola has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Quincy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Portola couldn't quite finish off Quincy in their previous matchup on Tuesday and fell 11-9. Will the Tigers have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
