Two dominant guards in Jason Clarke and Angelo Vega are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Miller School of Albemarle Mavericks and the Cape Fear Academy Hurricanes will face off at 1:30 p.m. on December 28th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Miller School of Albemarle has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 551 points over their last eight matches.
Last Sunday, the stars were shining brightly for Miller School of Albemarle in a 63-45 victory over Woodmere Academy. Given Miller School of Albemarle's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked tenth in Virginia, while Woodmere Academy is ranked 129th in New York), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Miller School of Albemarle's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Reece Hagy, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds. Hagy also grabbed two+ steals for the first time this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryan Crotty, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, Cape Fear Academy had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They snuck past Freedom Christian Academy with a 60-55 win. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Cape Fear Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kareem Anderson led the charge by scoring 16 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which Anderson has scored at least 25% of Cape Fear Academy's points. Vega was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.
Miller School of Albemarle pushed their record up to 6-2 with that victory, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.6 points per game. As for Cape Fear Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 8-1.
Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday's contest: Miller School of Albemarle have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having averaged 9.6 threes per game. It's a different story for Cape Fear Academy, though, as they've been averaging only 3.1 threes per game. Given Miller School of Albemarle's sizeable advantage in that area, Cape Fear Academy will need to find a way to close that gap.
