Luke Upshaw was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off one hit. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Max McTighe, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Berean Christian: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-2 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Nick Kullman, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, Irvington scored first but ultimately less than Pittsburg in their contest on Wednesday. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 6-2 to the Pirates, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Vikings haven't had much luck with the Pirates recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Irvington also got a good showing from Devin Patel, who kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. Patel has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Brayden Jaksa made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and fired off two home runs while going 2-for-3. Matthew Forbes also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Even though they lost, Irvington lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Berean Christian's record now sits at 5-2. As for Irvington, their record is now 2-6.
Berean Christian's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's game. Berean Christian has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Irvington, though, as they've been averaging only 1.4 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Berean Christian continue to outrun the ball?
