Video: Austin Trace with an insane catch
See the Canal Winchester pitcher make a bare-hand grab that's hard to believe. After winning the Boras Classic South Division tournament with a victory over nationally ranked JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), it's no surprise that Mira Costa is at the top of the initial MaxPreps medium schools national baseball rankings.
The Mustangs, who play in Division 3 in the Southern Section in California, knocked off the Lions 2-1 in a tournament that featured a number of the top teams in Southern California. Mira Costa will face Davis, currently the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard, in May for the championship of the Boras Classic. Davis won the northern half of the tournament.
Mira Costa is joined by one other California team in the top five. Redondo Union, unbeaten at 15-0, is No. 3 behind Teurlings Catholic. Archbishop McCarthy, ranked No. 2 in the Xcellent 50, is No. 4 while Buford, Brusly and Oxford are all tied at No. 5.
The medium school rankings are based on the MaxPreps Computer Rankings. Teams belong to state enrollment divisions with generally between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
