The Shandon Outlaws gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They walked away with a 22-9 victory over Maricopa. That's another feather in the cap for Shandon, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Shandon can attribute much of their success to Yelene Segura, who scored 14 points along with 3 steals. Another player making a difference was Kendall Granados, who scored 4 points along with 4 steals.
Maricopa's loss came despite strong showings from Aby Beltran and Emma Quilliams. Beltran dropped a double-double on 10 rebounds and 13 steals, while Quilliams scored 2 points along with 14 rebounds and 6 steals. Beltran scored a full 44.4% of Maricopa's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Shandon's victory bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Maricopa, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-4.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing Valley Christian Academy the next time they take the court. Shandon will host Valley Christian Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Maricopa will head out to face them at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
