While losing is never fun, Mount Miguel can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1198th, while the Vaqueros are ranked 323rd).
Despite the defeat, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: AJ Jones scored 11 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Jones has scored all season.
El Capitan's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Keira Heinricy, who scored 19 points along with three steals. Heinricy has been hot recently, having posted 18 or more points the last six times she's played. Lilly Williams was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with four steals.
Mount Miguel has been struggling recently as they've lost 11 of their last 12 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-22 record this season. As for El Capitan, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mount Miguel will challenge the Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for El Capitan, they will head out on the road to square off against the Foothillers at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Grossmont will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
