Video: Top 25 high school baseball rankings
Argyle finished on top after going 71-1-1 over past two seasons.
Prior to the 2019 season, Blake Walston of New Hanover (Wilmington, N.C.) was known more as a quarterback rather than one of the best pitchers in the nation.
As a junior, Walston was one of the Tar Heel State's leading passers with 4,340 yards. He became the all-time leading passer at Hanover with 7,018 career yards and landed a scholarship offer from North Carolina State.
His career, however, took a distinct turn during baseball season. In posting a 13-0 record for one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, Walston earned the attention of the Major League Baseball scouts, who saw a player who could someday improve on an already impressive 93 mph fastball. The Arizona Diamondbacks took Walston with the No. 26 overall pick in the first round and he signed a $2.45 million deal to join the team.
Walston earned a number of awards en route to his first-round success, earning Gatorade State Player of the Year honors as well as North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association All-State team. He also made the MaxPreps All-American Team and is now recognized as the MaxPreps Medium Schools National Player of the Year.
Walston helped New Hanover win back-to-back state championships, posting a 28-2 record while claiming the Class 3A state championship. Besides the impressive win-loss record, Walston also had 137 strikeouts and posted a 0.46 ERA in 75.1 innings pitched. He threw two no-hitters on the season, including one in the Class 3A state semifinals against D.H. Conley. He also struck out 17 batters in a game.
Medium School Coach of the Year Dave Pishkur of Andrean (Merrillville, Ind.) had the best record in school history this year, and that's saying something considering the success the Northwest Indiana school has experienced during Pishkur's 40 years at the helm. In posting a 36-1 record (with 35 straight wins), Andrean won its seventh state title since 2005.
The 59ers beat Edgewood 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning for their second straight Class 3A championship, marking the third time Andrean has won back-to-back titles. The victory also put Pishkur's record at 1,014-284. He surpassed former LaPorte coach Ken Schreiber (1,010) during the playoffs to become the state's all-time winningest coach.
The medium school All-American team consists of teams that play in state enrollment divisions that generally have between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
