The Steele Canyon Cougars's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Madison Warhawks at 6:00 p.m. on January 25th. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
In what's become a running theme this season, Steele Canyon gave their fans yet another huge victory on Tuesday. They breezed by El Cajon Valley on the road to the tune of 68-20. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 31-11.
Steele Canyon's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Deanna Guerrero led the charge by dropping a double-double on 13 points and 13 rebounds. Guerrero hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for seven straight games. Dana Dacurro was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Madison waltzed into their matchup on Friday with four straight wins but they left with five. They blew past Clairemont 63-11 on the road. Given Madison's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 630th, while Clairemont is ranked 1307th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Amyaha Walker, who scored 34 points along with nine steals and seven rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Sierra Minshew, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds.
Steele Canyon is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-7 record this season. As for Madison, their win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-5.
Thursday's match is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Steele Canyon have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 38.4 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Madison struggles in that department as they've been averaging 37.8 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Everything came up roses for Steele Canyon against Madison in their previous matchup back in January of 2023 as the team secured a 64-20 victory. With Steele Canyon ahead 36-11 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
