While Palo Verde Valley's victory against Holtville wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Palo Verde Valley sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 win over Holtville on Friday.
Drew Wright spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Palo Verde Valley saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Christian Aguilar, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Imperial narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Calexico 7-6.
Ruben Magos looked comfortable as he tossed 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024.
On the hitting side, Imperial let Logan Fisher and Izaiah Perez run wild. Fisher scored a run while going 3-for-3, while Perez scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave Fisher a new career-high. Jorge Becerra also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Imperial kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.
Palo Verde Valley's win was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-2-1. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of two runs across that stretch. As for Imperial, their record now sits at 7-4.
Palo Verde Valley couldn't quite finish off Imperial when the teams last played back in April of 2024 and fell 9-7. Can Palo Verde Valley avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
