After a string of six wins, the Helix Highlanders's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They fell 50-39 to Grossmont. Helix was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Foothillers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January.
When it comes to explaining why Helix lost, one person who can't be blamed is Valerie Marquez. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 11 points and 25 rebounds. Marquez hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for seven straight games. Jordan Lindsey was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with two steals.
Grossmont's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Aakash Price, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Price hasn't dropped below three steals for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Amethyst Price, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.
Helix's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-5. As for Grossmont, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.
Helix will head out on the road to challenge the Vaqueros at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. El Capitan is on a three-game streak of home wins, the Highlanders a four-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season)-- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. Grossmont will take on the Matadors at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mount Miguel will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 1198th, while the Foothillers are ranked 215th).
