Football Recap: Plant Keeps Sumner's Under Pressure

Plant scored first but ultimately less than Sumner in their matchup on Friday. They fell 28-24 to the Stingrays. The Panthers were not able to make up for their loss to the Stingrays from their previous meeting back in September of 2024.

Despite the loss, Plant still got an impressive performance from Dillon Rose-Bailey, who rushed for 91 yards and one TD, and also threw for 225 yards and one touchdown on only 12 passes. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 68 yards. 117 of Rose-Bailey's passing yards were hauled in by Davie Rolle.

Special teams also played a big role in the game for Plant, adding 12 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Treon Williams, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.

Even if they lost, Plant's defense still kept up the pressure with three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Ja'Quez Estera, Mark Del Cukut, and Tiago McDowell, who each picked up one sack apiece. Plant got some further help from Estera: he picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made 24 total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Sumner got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Antonio Balaguer out in front who threw for 252 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 71.4% of his passes, and also rushed for 47 yards. Another player making a difference was Tommy Scott, who rushed for 88 yards and one score.

Plant now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Sumner, their win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-1.

Looking ahead, Plant will face off against Armwood at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Hawks' defense has only allowed 10.2 points per game this season, so the Panthers' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Sumner, they will challenge Plant City at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
