On Tuesday, Mount Miguel took a serious blow against Granite Hills, falling 75-31. While losing is never fun, Mount Miguel can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1195th, while Granite Hills is ranked 554th).
Despite the loss, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: Jaylene Hughes scored 31 points along with five rebounds. That was a full 100% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the 24th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Meanwhile, Helix lost to Victory Christian Academy on the road by a decisive 41-24 margin on Saturday. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Helix has scored all season.
Mount Miguel dropped their record down to 4-23 with that defeat, which was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Helix, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 16-7 record this season.
Mount Miguel was taken down by Helix 76-28 in their previous matchup back in January. The contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Mount Miguel was down 44-20.
