Basketball Recap: Poway Takes a Loss

Poway played a tough match on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were dealt an 87-39 loss at the hands of the Westview Wolverines. While losing is never fun, the Titans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 596th, while the Wolverines are ranked 90th).

Several Titans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Raya Halonen, who posted nine points in addition to eight boards and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Emily Farr, who put up six points and ten rebounds.

Even though they lost, Poway smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Westview only pulled down eight offensive boards.

Westview's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Mia Jacobson, who went 10 of 16 on her way to 21 points along with eight boards and five assists. Jacobson continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Katie Graves was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds.

Poway has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last ten games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-13 record this season. As for Westview, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-6.

Poway is taking a road trip to face off against Mission Hills at 5:20 p.m. on Friday. Mission Hills knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Poway likes a good challenge. As for Westview, they will welcome Del Norte at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Westview is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.6 points per game this season.
