Video: Peyton Bevel highlights during record-setting night.
Watch the senior quarterback pass for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns on Friday night. There are only 3,124 residents in Stamford, Texas, located in the West Central part of the country's second largest state.
Peyton Bevel just helped put Stamford on the map.
The 6-foot, 160-pound senior quarterback for
Stamford (Texas) broke state high school passing records by throwing for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns in a 90-62 win over DeLeon on Friday.
Bevel already had impressive numbers coming in, having completed 67 of 111 for 1,436 yards and 23 touchdowns (only one interception) leading Stamford to four straight wins.
But the Bulldogs' fifth win was special. According to the
Abilene Reporter-News, the Bulldogs scored eight touchdowns of at least 44 yards, including four that went at least 65.
Bevel said he had no clue he was part of a record-breaking night. "I just go out there and play," he told the Reporter-News. "Glory to God. When you've got athletes like I do, it makes my job a lot easier."
According to the
NFHS record book, Bevel came close to breaking the
national record of 824 set last season by Alex Huston, of Glendale (Springfield, Mo.). Huston broke the previous mark of 787 set by Matt Miller of DuBois (Pa.) in 2015. Bevel moved into the No. 2 spot all-time for passing yards in a game.
His 12 TD passes in a game are also second in a game nationally, behind only Arthur Smith of
Cozad (Neb.) who threw for 15 scores in a 1921 game.
