The Katella Knights are taking a road trip to square off against the Kennedy Fighting Irish at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Katella is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
The scorekeeper got an easy start on Friday as neither Katella nor Buena Park made it on the board until the sixth inning. The Knights narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Coyotes 2-0. The victory continues a trend for the Knights in their matchups with the Coyotes: they've now won four in a row.
Anthony Garcia looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in 11 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Kevin Reyes Mejia was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI. Hector Perez also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Kennedy had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They came out on top against the Jaguars by a score of 5-2.
Anthony Hernandez was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). Hernandez was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his six plate appearances with one stolen base.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Travis Bergmann, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with four stolen bases and three runs. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
Kennedy pushed their record up to 14-9 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Katella, their record is now 16-3.
Kennedy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Katella hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .317. It's a different story for Kennedy, though, as they've only averaged .239. Will they be able to contain Katella's hitters?
Katella couldn't quite get it done against Kennedy in their previous meeting last Friday as they fell 4-1. Can the Knights avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
