Flower Mound and
Tomball were the top two Texas Class 6A teams in the Preseason MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings. This weekend the Jaguars and Cougars could meet for the state championship.
Tomball, ranked No. 25 to start the season, stays at No. 3 this week after sweeping
Bridgeland (Cypress) and upping its win streak to 27 games. The Cougars meet
Johnson (San Antonio) in the state semifinals.
Flower Mound, which started the season at No. 9, stayed at No. 5 this week despite needing three games to knock off
Pearce (Richardson) and advance to the other semifinal against
Pearland.
Should both Flower Mound and Tomball win, they would play Saturday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
In California,
Orange Lutheran (Orange) and
Granada (Livermore) moved up in the rankings after winning regional championships. The Lancers, who lost to
Harvard-Westlake (Studio City) in the Southern Section Division 1 semifinals, won three times to capture the Southern California Division 1 regional. The three wins allowed the Lancers to climb past Harvard-Westlake to No. 6.
The key win for the Lancers was the final against
La Mirada, a team that had defeated No. 2
Corona during the regular season. Since Orange Lutheran split its season series with Harvard-Westlake at 2-2, the La Mirada win was deemed enough to move the Lancers past Harvard-Westlake.
Granada defeated Sac-Joaquin Section champion
St. Mary's (Stockton) in the Northern California Division 1 regional final to finish 32-1. The Matadors moved up five spots to No. 7.
Dropped out: No. 22
Nazareth Academy (LaGrange Park, Ill.)Newcomer: No. 16
Mason (Ohio)Game of the Week: Granada 2,
Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.) 1, eight innings. The Matadors trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh when they tied the game on a RBI double by
A.J. Martinez. Granada won the game in the bottom of the eighth when Martinez's ground ball to the shortstop resulted in an error and allowed the winning run to score.
Game to Watch: Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) vs.
St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.). The Eaglets have lost three times to the Warriors this year but the 2022 national champions have to be considered a threat to Brother Rice's tremendous season. The two teams meet in the regional semifinals Wednesday.
Player of the Week: Chase VanAmeyde of Brother Rice had three home runs in a 16-2 win over Catholic Central and upped his season RBI total to 67. He enters the postseason just 16 RBI short of tying Drew Henson's state record of 83 RBI.
Streaks: Eaton won its fourth straight Class 3A state championship in Colorado and concluded its season with a 28-0 record. The win in the championship game, a 6-5 victory over University, puts the Reds at 69 wins in a row heading into the 2025 season. The Reds will start the season at No. 6 on the all-time consecutive wins list with 21 wins needed to pass
Portsmouth (N.H.) for the all-time consecutive wins record.
