Troy Ayers was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because South Central is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 9-12-1 otherwise. Ayers was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Weston June, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Alex Hamons was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.
Meanwhile, Calvert came tearing into Thursday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victors by a 12-0 margin over the Lakers. The result was nothing new for the Senecas, who have now won 18 games by six runs or more so far this season.
Like South Central, Calvert also got a great game from a two-way player: Tucker Coleman. On the mound, he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the most strikeouts Coleman has posted since May 4th. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
In other pitching news, Cohen Stull looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had over his last three matchups.
Back at the plate, Logan Ritzler was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Cameron Moyer, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Calvert was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .381. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .381 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Calvert's victory bumped their record up to 24-2-1. As for South Central, their win bumped their record up to 11-13-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. South Central has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Calvert struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
South Central suffered a grim 12-3 defeat to Calvert in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
