The Woodbridge Warriors will face off against the Irvine Vaqueros at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Woodbridge comes in on three and Irvine on five.
Woodbridge is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They came out on top against Valley Christian by a score of 4-1. Four seems to be a good number for the Warriors as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Caleb Camacho was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season.
Woodbridge was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Valley Christian only posted a batting average of .125.
Meanwhile, Irvine never let their opponents score on Friday. They put the hurt on St. Bernard with a sharp 8-0 victory. That eight run margin sets a new team best for the Vaqueros this season.
Irvine also got a great performance from Drake Brito as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Brito also tossed a walk, which is notable because the Vaqueros are 7-2 when he allows at most two walks, but 9-10 otherwise.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Evan Tamayo, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Nico Macalino was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
Irvine's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-12. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.3 runs on average over those games. As for Woodbridge, their win bumped their record up to 20-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Woodbridge has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Irvine struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Woodbridge couldn't quite get it done against Irvine in their previous matchup back in April as they fell 6-1. Can the Warriors avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
