Aptos and Soquel are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2022, but likely not for long. The Mariners will be playing in front of their home fans against the Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Aptos is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Aptos blew Harbor out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Harbor got their revenge. The Mariners fell just short of the Pirates by a score of 11-9. It was the first time this season that the Mariners let down their fans at home.
Dom Castillo stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double marked the first that he has hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Finn Cormier, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Soquel had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.7 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Tuesday. They never let the Cougars get on the board and left with a 20-0 victory. Considering the Knights have won five contests by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Jake Escalante was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Kaden Kelly looked comfortable as he tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
Back at the plate, Hudson Summerrill and Trey Sousa did most of the damage at the plate: Summerrill went 2-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base, while Sousa went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most runs Sousa has posted since back in April of 2025. Another player making a difference was Ari Mena, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.
Soquel kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive matchups.
Soquel's win bumped their record up to 8-1. As for Aptos, their loss dropped their record down to 4-2.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Aptos hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .365. However, it's not like Soquel struggles in that department as they've averaged .353. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Aptos came up short against Soquel in their previous meeting back in May of 2025, falling 4-1. Will the Mariners have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
