Mt. Eden hasn't had much luck against Newark Memorial recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Monarchs will be playing in front of their home fans against the Cougars at 10:00 a.m. Mt. Eden is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.
Mt. Eden barely beat Mission San Jose the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Monarchs never let the Warriors get on the board and left with a 6-0 win on Wednesday. Winning may never get old, but the Monarchs sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Mt. Eden let Cristian Alvarenga and Bryan Zamora run wild. Alvarenga went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run, while Zamora got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. Those two stolen bases gave Alvarenga a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Javier Alfaro III, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last five times Newark Memorial and American have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Thursday. The Cougars walked away with a 7-3 victory over the Eagles.
The team relied heavily on Andres Romo, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Malosi Gaoteote, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Newark Memorial pushed their record up to 12-3 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Mt. Eden, they now have a winning record of 9-8.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Mt. Eden has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Newark Memorial struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Mt. Eden suffered a grim 13-1 defeat to Newark Memorial when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Will the Monarchs have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
