Two dominant in Emma Carson and Kristen Awakuni are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Rio Hondo Prep Kares will be playing in front of their home fans against the Mayfield Cubs at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Rio Hondo Prep posted their biggest win since December 1, 2023 on Friday. They blew past Chadwick 58-28 at home. Given Rio Hondo Prep's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 448th, while Chadwick is ranked 948th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Rio Hondo Prep's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Carson, who scored 14 points along with five assists and five steals. Carson has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. Another player making a difference was Tara Riley, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Mayfield was fully in charge on Monday, breezing past La Puente 46-3 at home. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 25-2.
Rio Hondo Prep is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 11-6 record this season. As for Mayfield, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-6.
Everything came up roses for Rio Hondo Prep against Mayfield in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 as the squad secured a 55-24 win. Does Rio Hondo Prep have another victory up their sleeve, or will Mayfield turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
