The Calvert Senecas will take on the South Central Trojans at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Calvert is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Thursday. They never let Danbury get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory. Considering the Senecas have won 18 matchups by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Tucker Coleman made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
In other pitching news, Cohen Stull looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Logan Ritzler was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Cameron Moyer, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Calvert was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .381. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .381 or higher in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, South Central got the win against Lucas on Thursday by a conclusive 11-0. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Trojans.
Like Calvert, South Central also got a great game from a two-way player: Troy Ayers. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Ayers also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because South Central is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 9-12-1 otherwise. Ayers was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Weston June, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Cole Frankart was another key player, earning one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Calvert's record is now 24-2-1. As for South Central, their record now sits at 11-13-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Calvert has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Calvert's way against South Central in their previous meeting back in April of 2023, as Calvert made off with a 12-3 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Senecas since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
