The Village Christian Crusaders came tearing into Saturday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They blew past Calabasas 83-44 at home. Given Village Christian's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 24th, while Calabasas is ranked 747th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Layla Davis was her usual excellent self, scoring 31 points. That makes it four consecutive games in which she has scored at least 25% of Village Christian's points. Alanna Neale was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite the loss, Calabasas still got an impressive performance from Scarlett Weiner, who scored 15 points. Weiner scored a full 34.1% of Calabasas' points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jocelynn Townsend, who scored 8 points along with 6 rebounds.
Village Christian's win bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Calabasas, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-4.
Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Birmingham the next time they take the court. Calabasas will head out to face Birmingham at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, while Village Christian will head out to face them at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
