Muncie Central hasn't had much luck against Mt. Vernon recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Bearcats will square off against the Marauders at 6:00 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Muncie Central took a 17-run loss the last time they faced off against Cowan, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Bearcats had just enough and edged out the Blackhawks 7-5.
Aaron Coggeshall spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Logan Campbell was excellent, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Muncie Central's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 1-13 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Rodney Dabney, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run.
Muncie Central always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon waltzed into their game on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Trojans a 4-0 shutout.
Not much got past Tristan Sitton, who gave up just four hits and racked up 11 Ks to keep New Castle off the board.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Gage Blanchard, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.
Mt. Vernon pushed their record up to 8-5 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Muncie Central, their record is now 4-14.
Muncie Central suffered a grim 20-1 defeat to Mt. Vernon in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Bearcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
