Andrew Shean was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. University is 6-3 when Shean allows two or fewer earned runs, but 6-9 otherwise.
At the plate, University saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was David Wu, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Laguna Beach got the win against Portola on Friday by a conclusive 10-1.
Becker Sybirski was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in February.
In other batting news, Laguna Beach let Parker Moore and Lincoln Adams run wild. Moore went 3-for-4 with five RBI, one run, and one double, while Adams got on base in all five of his plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most runs Adams has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Otis Boultinghouse, who went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Laguna Beach kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Portola only managed two hits.
Laguna Beach pushed their record up to 21-3 with the win, which was their ninth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.9 runs on average over those games. As for University, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-12.
University might still be hurting after the 9-0 loss they got from Laguna Beach in their previous matchup back in April of 2017. Will the Trojans have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
