Softball Recap: Athens Makes It Five in a Row on the Road

Athens had won five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Friday they bumped their record up to 8-0 to make it six. They walked away with a 5-1 win over the North Penn-Liberty Mountie. The game was the first time the Wildcats have beaten the Mountie on their field since April 20, 2021.

Gretchan Hiley spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Athens secured the victory behind a pair of hitters. One of them was McKenna Jarvis, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Savanannah Finan also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Having lost for the first time this season, North Penn-Liberty fell to 7-1. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, they couldn't push the score so high this time.

On North Penn-Liberty's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Elyna Booth gave up three earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 14 Ks.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Athens will challenge Troy at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for North Penn-Liberty, they will face off against Wellsboro at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
