Denver South extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to seven on Saturday, dropping them down to 0-4. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-7 heartbreaker at the hands of the Mullen Mustangs. The Ravens were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mustangs apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in August of 2024.
Olivia Gibson spent all 7.1 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and six unearned) runs on nine hits.
At the plate, Emma Gibson was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples, two stolen bases, and five RBI. She also put up two runs, which were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Jerica Montoa, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
As for Mullen, the win keeps them at an undefeated 4-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games.
On Mullen's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Bayla Slucki gave up five earned (and two unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks. Slucki has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Roslyn Frequez was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one stolen base. Maize Jackson was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Denver South has already played their next match (against Vista PEAK Prep), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Mullen, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 12-11 loss against Forge Christian on the 26th.
