In what's become a running theme this season, the Corner Canyon Chargers gave their fans yet another huge victory on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 75-48 victory over Riverton at home. Given Corner Canyon's advantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 19th, while Riverton is ranked 78th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Corner Canyon had a senior duo take command as Elina Mortensen scored 33 points along with nine rebounds and two steals and Maia Rhay scored 24 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Rhay has scored all season. Brooke Luper was another key contributor, scoring six points along with five rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Riverton lost, one person who can't be blamed is Faythe Stauffer. Despite the final result, she scored 24 points. That was a full 50% of Riverton's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Maggie Hamblin, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Corner Canyon pushed their record up to 10-4 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.8 points per game. As for Riverton, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost eight of their last nine matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-10 record this season.
Corner Canyon will head out on the road to square off against Herriman at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Riverton, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Bingham at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Bingham is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 55.3 points per game.
