South Mecklenburg is a perfect 10-0 against Berry since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The South Mecklenburg Sabres will welcome the Berry Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Last Saturday, South Mecklenburg earned a 10-7 win over Watauga. The victory continues a trend for the Sabres in their matchups with the Pioneers: they've now won four in a row.
Reese Guertin was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing Two bases. while going 4-for-4. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Andrew Gerow, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 3-for-5. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. Chase Bremer was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.
South Mecklenburg was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Berry). They were the clear victor by a 16-4 margin over Rocky River on Monday. With that win, the Cardinals brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Bryce Hodges made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Hodges was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing Three bases. while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Tyler Davis was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing Four bases. while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Justin Williams, who scored two runs and stole Four bases. while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
With the victory, Berry broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-4. As for South Mecklenburg, the win got them back to even at 3-3.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. South Mecklenburg has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .487. However, it's not like Berry struggles in that department as they've averaged .466. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
