The Coronado Islanders will look to defend their home pitch on Wednesday against the La Costa Canyon Mavericks at 5:00 p.m.
Coronado's last game on Thursday was all defense as neither team scored a goal. Neither they nor Point Loma could gain the upper hand so the two teams had to settle for a 0-0 draw. The result (or lack thereof) marked Coronado's first draw of the season.
Meanwhile, La Costa Canyon had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 2 goals), and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They had just enough and edged Carlsbad out 2-1. The victory was all the more spectacular given La Costa Canyon's disadvantage in MaxPreps' California soccer rankings (they are ranked 415th, while Carlsbad is ranked 195th).
La Costa Canyon was led to victory by the tag-team duo of
Meena Shahri and
Avery Baker, who scored both of La Costa Canyon's goals. The pair have combined for a total of seven so far this season.
Coronado's draw makes their record 4-10-1 this season. As for La Costa Canyon, their victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-9-1.
Coronado came up short against La Costa Canyon when the teams last played back in December of 2019, falling 3-1. Can Coronado avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
