After a string of six wins, the Chester Volcanoes's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. Their tough 48-27 loss to Loyalton might stick with them for a while. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Chester came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 282nd, while Loyalton is ranked 850th).
Loyalton's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Catherine Petterson, who scored 13 points along with eight steals and five rebounds. Those five rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophie Holland, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and three steals.
Chester's loss dropped their record down to 6-2. As for Loyalton, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-6.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Chester's road trip will continue as they head out to face Portola at 5:00 p.m. on January 9, 2024. After both having extra time off, Loyalton and Virginia City will shake off the cobwebs and take on one another at 5:30 p.m. on January 3, 2024. Virginia City has now lost ten straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since November 30.
