ALAMEDA, Calif. --- The State CIF announced the 27 state academic team champions for the 2006-07 school year Monday, with Mission San Jose, Los Gatos, and La Jolla each claiming multiple titles.
"We continue to be impressed with the academic success of students throughout the state," CIF Executive Director Marie M. Ishida said. "The academic state championship program recognizes those teams that truly have embodied the CIF's belief in educational athletics."
Fremont's Mission San Jose, a member of the North Coast Section, took top honors in badminton (3.83), boys tennis (3.78), boys track and field (3.74), and wrestling (3.59) to lead the state with four academic team titles.
Los Gatos of the Central Coast Section took home a pair of titles in girls' sports - basketball (3.80) and tennis (3.78) - while La Jolla finished on top in girls lacrosse (3.71) and boys swimming (3.63).
According to the CIF, Gilroy's girls cross country team had the highest grade point average in the state, earning a collective 3.95.
This marks the third year that all CIF-approved sports were eligible for consideration. CIF Academic State Championships are offered for 27 teams in 17 sports. Previously, only teams in state championship sports were eligible for team academic honors.
The CIF Academic State Championships (formerly the Scholastic State Championships) were initiated in 1996 as a way to reward teams with the highest collective grade point averages, based on an unweighted 4.0 scale, in their respective sport. Championship teams receive banners suitable for display in their school gym.
All nominees were their respective CIF Section academic team champion. Section offices forwarded their local winners in all sports for statewide consideration.
