The Santa Ynez Pirates had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.2 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They snuck past Atascadero with a 44-38 win. Given Santa Ynez's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 356th, while Atascadero is ranked 869th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Among those leading the charge was Lexi Molera, who scored 12 points along with five assists and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. Kayla Morrell was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Santa Ynez is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. As for Atascadero, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-14.
Coincidentally, the pair will both be playing Templeton the next time they take the court. Santa Ynez will head out to face Templeton at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Atascadero will head out to face them at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
