Leadership Public Schools Richmond had to kick off their season on the road on Wednesday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the KIPP King Lions, sneaking past 8-7.
Rene Lopez made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off only one hit. Lopez was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Mateo Velazquez was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Brian Martinez, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
