Top high school athletes of the decadeFootball
Murray ranks No. 17 all-time in Texas with 10,429 yards, but more than anything he was a winner. Allen went 47-1 in his three seasons as starting quarterback (2012-14) and the only game the Eagles lost was one that Murray did not play. Allen won three straight Class 6A state championships and Murray was twice named the MaxPreps National Player of the Year. He went on to win the Heisman Trophy and become the first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Girls Volleyball
Kathryn Plummer, Aliso Niguel (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), 2016
One of the most decorated athletes of the 2010s, Plummer was the Gatorade California state Player of the Year in 2015 and she became the first player in history to win FIVB medals in beach and indoor volleyball in the same year. She was a three-time All-American in college and a two-time NCAA champion at Stanford while winning the Sullivan Award in 2019 as the nation's best amateur athlete.
Boys Volleyball
TJ Defalco, Huntington Beach (Calif.), 2015
Played on the great Oiler teams in the middle of the decade, winning the last 104 matches of his high school career. He was a three-time All-CIF first team pick and was the Division 1 player of the year as a senior while also earning All-America honors. In college at Long Beach State, DeFalco earned All-America honors four straight years.
Girls Tennis
Kate Fahey, Rumson-Fair Haven (Rumson, N.J.), 2015
A three-time All-American in high school (she did not play high school tennis as a junior), Fahey went on to earn All-Big Ten honors four straight seasons at Michigan and was twice named Big Ten Athlete of the Year.
Boys Tennis
Jack Sock, Blue Valley North (Overland Park, Kan.), 2011
In high school, Sock won four straight Kansas 6A state championships and had an 80-0 career record. He went on to reach as high as No. 8 in national tennis rankings and he won a gold medal in mixed doubles in the 2016 Olympics and a bronze medal in doubles.
Boys Soccer
Cristian Roldan, El Rancho (Pico Rivera, Calif.), 2013
The Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2013, Roldan led his team to a 29-2-1 record and a Southern Section Division III championship. He scored 54 goals and had 31 assists on the season. He has played for the U.S. National Team and has been a member of the Seattle Sounders.
Girls Soccer
Morgan Andrews, Milford (N.H.), 2013
Andrews is the only girls soccer player during the past decade to earn Gatorade National Player of the Year honors twice (2012, 2013). As a senior, she scored 31 goals and had 18 assists. She finished her career with 114 goals. She went on to play at Notre Dame and Southern California. She currently plays for Reign FC.
Boys Swimming
Ryan Murphy, Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.), 2013
Part of the Bolles swimming dynasty, Murphy is the most accomplished of the school's long list of great swimmers. He holds the national record in the 100-yard backstroke and was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that set the national record. He was also a member of a 200-yard medley relay team and a 400-yard freestyle relay team that set national records that have since been broken. At the 2016 Olympics, Murphy won three gold medals in the backstroke and medley races.

Girls Swimming
Katie Ledecky, Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart (Bethesda, Md.), 2015
Ledecky competed in the 2012 Olympics at age 15, earning a gold medal in the 800 meters while setting an American record. She went on to win four more gold medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics. While in high school, Ledecky set multiple national records in the 500-yard and 200-yard freestyle races.
Girls Golf
Rachel Heck, St. Agnes Academy (Memphis, Tenn.), 2020
The USA Today national girls golfer of the year in 2017 and 2018, Heck has won four state championships while at St. Agnes. She was also ranked as the No. 10 amateur golfer in the world in June of 2019.
Boys Golf
Jordan Spieth, Dallas Jesuit (Texas), 2011
Before going on to win the Masters (2015), the U.S. Open (2015) and the British Open (2017), Spieth was a three-time Class 5A state champion in Texas. Also while in high school, Spieth won two junior amateur championships, joining Tiger Woods as the only golfer to accomplish the feat.
Boys Cross Country
Grant Fisher, Grand Blanc (Mich.), 2015
A two-time National Gatorade Player of the Year in cross country (2013, 2014), Fisher is also one of seven high school students to run a sub-four minute mile. He won the Foot Locker Nationals two years in a row and went on to earn 12 NCAA Division I All-America awards while at Stanford.
Girls Cross Country
Katelyn Tuohy, North Rockland (Thiells, N.Y.), 2020
A two-time Gatorade National Cross Country player of the year (2017, 2018), Tuohy was also the overall National Athlete of the Year by Gatorade in 2018. She is a three-time Nike Cross Nationals champion (2017, 2018, 2019), and she holds all-time national records in the mile, 3,200 meters, 5,000 meters, and 4,500 meters.
Boys Basketball
Karl Anthony Towns, St. Joseph (Metuchen, N.J.), 2014
The Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2014, Towns led St. Joseph to three state championships during this three high school seasons. He was second-team All-American while at Kentucky and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft. After being named Rookie of the Year in 2016, Towns had made two All-Star games and was third team All-NBA in 2018.
Girls Basketball
Breanna Stewart, Cicero-North Syracuse (Cicero, N.Y.), 2012
One of the most decorated women's basketball players of the decade, Stewart was the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a senior (2012), went on to earn College National Player of the Year honors three times while at Connecticut, was a two-time WNBA All-Star, an Olympic Gold Medalist and the WNBA MVP (2018).
Boys Wrestling
Mark Hall, Apple Valley (Minn.), 2016
A six-time state champion in high school, Hall finished his career with a 277-4 record, 171 consecutive wins and 189 pins. He also helped Apple Valley to six state titles. He enters his senior season at Penn State as a three-time national finalist, a three-time All-American and an NCAA champion (2017).
Girls Wrestling
Gracie Figueroa, Selma (Calif.), 2018
Undefeated in her career at Selma (193-0) where she won four state championships, Figueroa began her college career at Menlo College with an NAIA national championship as a freshman. Her senior year at Selma, Figueroa was named the state female athlete of the year by Cal-Hi Sports.
Baseball
Francisco Lindor, Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.), 2013
A MaxPreps All-American as a senior, Lindor was drafted No. 8 overall by the Cleveland Indians in 2013. Since making the Major Leagues in 2015, Lindor has been a four-time All-Star and has won two Golden Gloves.
Softball
Taylor McQuillin, Mission Viejo (Calif.), 2015.
A three-time all-state selection, McQuillin was the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a junior. Helped Mission Viejo to back-to-back national No. 1 rankings. While at Arizona, McQuillin was a four-time all-conference selection and was All-American as a senior.
Boys Ice Hockey
Casey Mittelstadt, Eden Prairie (Minn.), 2017
USA Today chose Mittelstadt as its national player of the year in both 2017 and 2016. He was a first-round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres, but chose to attend Minnesota. In 2018, Mittelstadt joined the Sabres, but was later assigned to the Rochester Americans in the AHL.
Girls Ice Hockey
Hannah Brandt, Hill-Murray (Maplewood, Minn.), 2012
The state player of the year as a senior, Brandt finished her high school career with 192 goals and 142 assists. She went on to be a three-time All-American at Minnesota and was a member of the gold-medal winning USA team at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Boys Lacrosse
Brennan O'Neil, St. Anthony's (Melville, N.Y.), 2020
Although he's not done with his high school career, O'Neil is already being considered one of the best boys lacrosse players in over a decade. He finished his junior season as the US Lacrosse Magazine's national player of the year. He scored 56 goals and had 16 assists last year. He's headed to Duke next year.
Girls Lacrosse
Sophia Turchetta, Bromfield (Harvard, Mass.), 2016
According to the National Federation of High Schools record book, no athlete has more girls lacrosse goals than Turchetta, in fact no one is even close. Turchetta posted 540 goals in her career, which is 71 more than No. 2 on the list. She made All-American multiple times and was a three-time Central Massachusetts MVP.
Boys Track
Michael Norman, Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.), 2016
Norman won the Gatorade National Boys Track and Field player of the year honors while posting some of the top sprint times of all-time. Included on the list is an NFHS record of 45.19 seconds in the 400 meters at the 2015 state meet. Norman also broke NCAA records while at Southern California.
Girls Track
Sydney McLaughlin, Union Catholic (Scotch Plains, N.J.), 2017
A two-time Gatorade National Girls Track and Field player of the year, McLaughlin finished third in the 400 meter hurdles as the 2016 Olympic Trials prior to her senior year. In 2019, McLaughlin won a gold medal in the 4x400 meter relay and a silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles.
Note: athletes who were homeschooled or played at sports academies were not considered for selection.
