The MaxPreps All Sac-Joaquin Section girls basketball team honors the top players in the area.
Following a win by
St. Mary's (Stockton) in the Division I championship game at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento,
Jordan Lee highlights the list along with
Nina Cain of
McClatchy (Sacramento) as Sac-Joaquin Section Co-Players of the Year. The list highlights three teams, 16 honorable mentions, the top two players in each class and the coach of the year.
CO-PLAYERS OF THE YEAR
Senior | Forward
A MaxPreps All-American and national top 10 recruit, Lee could score, rebound, pass and defend at an elite level. After reaching the Division I section title game, Lee and the Rams defeated Folsom in a rematch of last year's final. The future Texas Longhorn had a high of 41 points this season while averaging 24 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game.
Junior | Forward
Helped the Lions through a tough gauntlet of games that ended with a section playoff run in Division I. Ranked a top 50 recruit nationally, she averaged 20 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. In the game against Whitney and Stanford-bound Harper Peterson, Cain had 22 points while teammate and first-teamer Norret Lewis had 23 in the overtime victory.
JUNIORS OF THE YEAR
A year after narrowly falling to a section champion in the semifinals, Skrzyniarz helped the Eagles win all of their section playoff games by 15 or more points to hold up the blue championship banner.
She scored at least 11 points in every game this season and had 14 double-doubles. Also an excellent defender, Skrzyniarz had 4-plus steals on 13 occasions.
Came up big all season, but especially when it mattered most. In the Division V section championship victory, she scored 25 points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out six assists and recorded three steals.
The story of this three-sport athlete starts on the defensive end of the floor where she averaged 5.3 steals per contest. The facilitator also dished out 4.3 assists to go with her 13.3 points per game.
SOPHOMORES OF THE YEAR
The section's leading scorer averaged 31.2 points per game as the Lions reached the section championship. Every night the sophomore scored at least 20 points. The all-around player had 25 double-doubles and four triple-doubles.
Harris joined the 50-point club in a Jan. 18 game when she scored 53 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. A week later she had 22 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists in the same game.
Not only did Smith do everything on the court, but she also got the job done in the classroom with a 4.2 grade point average. The sophomore averaged 19.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.4 steals per game on a Hawks squad that went 23-6 with a league title.
Holding an offer from Fresno State, shecould get the tough rebounds, including a Dec. 2 game where she tallied up 18 boards.
FRESHMEN OF THE YEAR
Played impact minutes for a Rams squad that won the Division I section crown. She made her presence felt immediately by scoring 21 points in her third career game on 8 of 11 shooting while recording four steals defensively.
Scored at least 10 points in 24 of her 28 games and had a career-high 22 points in a Dec. 14 victory. The 6-foot forward is also making her presence known defensively by averaging 3.3 steals per contest.
Coach of the Year
Alle Moreno, St. Mary's
In her fourth year as head coach, Moreno reached the same mountain top that she reached as a player by winning a section championship. The former Rams starting point guard coached her alma mater back to the section title for a second straight year and brought the blue banner back to Stockton this year. On average, St. Mary's outscored its opponents by 17.3 points per game this season.
