Monrovia and South Pasadena are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Monrovia Wildcats face off against South Pasadena Tigers at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Monrovia's pitching crew has only allowed 2.2 runs per game this season, so South Pasadena's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Monrovia's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. They walked away with a 5-0 win over Temple City.
The result came thanks to James Quesenbery's shutout, as he gave up just three hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Troy Grise, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Julian Fernandez, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, South Pasadena came up short against La Canada on Monday and fell 11-8.
Hanson Chan was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched 4.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits.
At the plate, Aaron Kawasaki was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Diego Gurfein, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one RBI.
South Pasadena's defeat ended a ten-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 4-5. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. As for Monrovia, their victory bumped their record up to 7-2.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Monrovia has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Pasadena struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Monrovia suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to South Pasadena in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can Monrovia avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
