The El Capitan Vaqueros will be taking part in a tournament against the Christian Patriots at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. El Capitan has given up an average of 6.8 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
El Capitan is headed into Monday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight games on Friday. They fell 11-6 to Madison.
Dustin Celeste was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Eckis, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
While Christian didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Grossmont 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Patriots have posted since April 21, 2025.
Walker Kane made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season.
In other batting news, Maximus Villalva was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI. Benji Molina was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one double.
Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .545. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
The victory made it two in a row for Christian and bumps their season record up to 6-3. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games. As for El Capitan, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-6.
El Capitan might still be hurting after the 12-2 loss they got from Christian in their previous meeting last Thursday. Can the Vaqueros avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
