The Union Spartans will take on the Douglas Byrd Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Union has given up an average of 22.9 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Union is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They came up short against Berean Baptist Academy on Saturday, falling 18-8.
Matt Reaves was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with five stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Noah Serrano, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBI.
Douglas Byrd let Fayetteville Christian stack six runs on them in the sixth inning on Saturday but luckily Douglas Byrd prevailed anyway. The Eagles narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Warriors 12-11. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.
Brody Callahan was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs but no hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with six stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Douglas Byrd is 2-1 when Callahan posts two or more runs, but 2-5 otherwise.
In other batting news, MJ McDuffie was incredible, going 2-for-3 with six stolen bases and three runs. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1.2 stolen bases per game. Caleb Kellon also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Douglas Byrd was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Douglas Byrd's record is now 4-6. As for Union, their loss dropped their record down to 0-16.
Union might still be hurting after the 16-3 defeat they got from Douglas Byrd when the teams last played back in March. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
