Baseball Game Preview: Oakmont Vikings vs. Center Cougars

The Oakmont Vikings will head out on the road to square off against the Center Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Oakmont will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.

Oakmont barely beat Lincoln the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Vikings put the hurt on the Fighting Zebras with a sharp 8-2 victory on Friday. Considering the Vikings have won 11 games by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Trevor Wilson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off eight hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, CJ Smith looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Cooper Kunis, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Beau Ogles, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

Meanwhile, Center didn't have quite enough to beat Marysville on Friday and fell 9-8.

Oakmont's win was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 21-5. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games. As for Center, their loss dropped their record down to 10-10-1.

Oakmont beat Center 5-1 in their previous matchup back in March of 2016. Will the Vikings repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
