Puyallup (Wash.), the only remaining undefeated team in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings, moved up to No. 2 this week after
Alonso (Tampa) eliminated National High School Invitational champion
Venice from the Florida Class 7A state playoffs last week.
The Vikings are the lone unbeaten after
Gloucester Catholic (Gloucester City, N.J.) dropped a pair of games last week and fell out of the MaxPreps Top 25. Puyallup heads into district playoffs after a pair of wins last week but won't begin Class 4A state tournament play until May 24.
IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) remains at No. 1 after completing its season two weeks ago.
Corona (Calif.), the only other team to be ranked No. 1 in the nation this year, moved back up to No. 3 despite not playing last week. The Panthers had no league games on the schedule last week and won't play until May 20 after receiving a first-round bye in the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
The Florida, Georgia and Louisiana state playoffs bumped four teams out of the rankings this week.
Harlem, which had a 44-game win streak two weeks ago, lost three of its last four games, including two to
Pickens (Jasper), and was eliminated from the Georgia AAA playoffs.
Spruce Creek (Port Orange) and
Pace also fell from the rankings after playoff losses in Florida.
Hagerty (Oviedo) ended Spruce Creek's season with a pair of wins in Class 7A while
Buchholz (Gainesville) rebounded from a first-game loss to beat Pace twice and eliminate it from the Class 6A playoffs.
Barbe (Lake Charles) lost to crosstown rival
Sam Houston (Lake Charles) in the Louisiana Class 6A state playoffs. Sam Houston advanced to the final of the Non-Select Division 1 bracket, where it will face
Live Oak (Watson).
A total of five teams, two from Louisiana and three from Florida, moved into the rankings. Live Oak debuted at No. 20 while Select Division 1 finalist and defending MaxPreps National Champion
Catholic (Baton Rouge, La.) returned to the rankings at No. 21.
From Florida, Class 6A semifinalist
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) moved up to No. 22 while Class 4A semifinalists
Jesuit (Tampa) and
American Heritage (Plantation) moved in at Nos. 23 and 24 respectively.
Venice lost twice to Alonso but stayed in the rankings on the strength of its win at the NHSI in April. That could change based on how the Florida postseason plays out.
Game of the week: Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) def.
West Broward (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), 8-7. Faced with the possibility of playing a third game against West Broward in its quarterfinal series, Stoneman Douglas rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and won the game on a walk-off two-run homer by
Lorenzo Laurel.
Game to watch: Etowah (Woodstock, Ga.) vs.
Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.), the top team in Georgia takes on the defending state champion in the AAAAAAA semifinals. The two teams played in the season opener on Feb. 14 with Etowah winning 9-3.
Pitcher of the week: Wilson Andersen, Jesuit (Tampa). The Tigers returned to the Top 25 on the arm of Andersen, who struck out 16 and gave up no runs on one hit in an 8-0 win over Barron Collier in the quarterfinals.
Hitter of the week: Jack Ruckert, Catholic (Baton Rouge). The defending MaxPreps 2024 National Champions returned to the rankings behind the hitting of Ruckert, who had three home runs in a pair of semifinal wins over St. Thomas More (Lafayette) in the Select Division 1 playoffs. The total nearly doubled Ruckert's output for the season as he now leads the team with seven homers.
Streaks: Bishop Hendricken (Warwick, R.I.) saw its 36-game win streak come to an end last week, leaving
Hempfield (Landisville, Pa.) with the longest active winning streak at 28 games in a row. The Black Knights won their last seven games of the 2024 season to capture the Class 6A state championship and they are 21-0 in 2025. Hempfield does not have the longest unbeaten streak, however. That claim goes to
Service (Anchorage, Alaska), which has gone 36 games (35-0-1) without losing. The Cougars were 22-0-1 last year and are 13-0 in 2025.
