The Mogollon Mustangs will head out to challenge the St. Johns Redskins at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
14 must be Mogollon's lucky number: they beat Hayden with that score not once but twice on Friday. The Mustangs beat the Lobos by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 14-7. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Lobos: they've now won nine in a row.
KADDIE PORTER was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off four hits. PORTER was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, Mogollon got a massive performance out of AUTUMN JONES, who fired off two home runs and three RBI while going 3-for-5. Those two home runs gave JONES a new career-high. TAELEE TENNEY was another key player, going 2-for-4 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one double.
Mogollon lost a few balls and finished the game with four home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, St. Johns got the win against Northland Prep Academy on Monday by a conclusive 26-4.
Like Mogollon, St. Johns also got a great game from a two-way player: Kasey Tsinajinnie. She struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). Tsinajinnie has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Libby Overson, who went 4-for-5 with five runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Lucy Sundahl, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple.
The win got Mogollon back to even at 12-12. As for St. Johns, their victory bumped their record up to 15-9-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. Mogollon hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like St. Johns struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.9 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Mogollon suffered a grim 16-4 defeat to St. Johns in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
