Doherty hasn't had much luck against Widefield recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Spartans are taking a road trip to face off against the Gladiators at 3:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Pueblo East hit Doherty with a six-run fourth inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans lost 17-11 to the Eagles. Even if the Spartans couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.
Maddie Schiltz stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Laila Thurman also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, Widefield entered their tilt with Canon City on Saturday with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. They came out on top against the Tigers by a score of 12-7.
Olivia McEwen made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up seven earned runs off ten hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Susy Salvidrez, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Taylor Hall was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs.
Widefield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .438. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .364 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Widefield's record is now 16-2-1. As for Doherty, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-16.
Doherty suffered a grim 13-3 defeat to Widefield in their previous meeting back in August of 2024. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
