Video: Top 10 Plays of the Week
See Steve Montoya and Chris Stonebraker break down the best of the best.
After finding itself on the edge of MaxPreps Xcellent Preseason Top 50 Softball Rankings, Oakleaf (Orange Park, Fla.) didn't waste any time in getting noticed. The Knights didn't just break into the Top 25, they exploded all the way to No. 10.
After opening the season with an 8-7 win, Oakleaf has produced four shutouts in five games, outscoring opponents 58-2. And done so with pitching and power.
Leading the hitters are senior and four-year, All-State pick
Rebecca Koskey (Florida International signee), senior
Angela Agurkis (Florida Atlantic signee) and future Florida Gators
Baylee Goddard and
Katie Kistler.
Junior
Madi Davis (Central Florida commit) and junior pitcher
Cambria Arturo (Jacksonville commit) have handled the pitching. Arturo was 4-0 and did not allow an earned run in 2017, while Davis was 10-0 as a sophomore with a 0.83 ERA. In two seasons at Oakleaf, she is 21-0.
If you're counting, Oakleaf has 11 players who have signed or committed to play Division 1 softball.
While the Knights were making headlines, No. 1 Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) remained atop this week's Xcellent Top 25 by opening the season with a convincing win. However, preseason No. 2 Pinnacle lost its opener before rebounding with three wins and dropping to No. 16.
Unbeaten The Colony (Texas) took advance of Pinnacle's loss and jumped to No. 2. Canyon (New Braunsfels, Texas), claimed to No. 3.
Also new to the Top 25 this week are unbeatens Barbers Hill (Mt. Belvieu, Texas) and Gainesville (Fla.).
