The high school football season in Delaware came to a close over the weekend. Middletown was among the winners, beating Smyrna 28-22 in the Class 3A state title game at the University of Delaware. That back-and-forth triumph helped propel the Cavaliers to the No. 1 ranking in the final MaxPreps Delaware Top 25.
Middletown was led all year by MaxPreps Delaware Player of the Year
Braden Davis who completed 15-of-25 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown in the state championship game. Through the first nine games of the season, Davis completed 114-of-156 passes for 1,872 yards and 20 scores.
The Cavaliers scored 414 points for the year, an average of 34.5 points an outing, while putting 32 points or more on the scoreboard seven times. Defensively, Zach Blum's club limited its opposition to 123 points in 12 games, or 10.3 points per contest.
In a year in which Delaware expanded to a three-class format, Middletown limited its foes to 15 points or less 10 times and posted three shutouts in winning its eighth state football title in school history and the first championship on the gridiron since 2012.
Class 2A champion Archmere Academy won all 13 of its contests and finish the year ranked No. 2 after claiming the school's first state title since 1982. The 27-0 shutout of Woodbridge allowed the Auks to claim their fourth state title in program history. Smyrna, meanwhile, ends the year on the No. 3 rung.
Class 1A state champion Laurel outscored St. Elizabeth 28-14 in the title game to claim the No. 12 spot at season's end. The 14-point win allowed the Bulldogs to claim their first state football title since 1991 and the school's fourth in program history.
