The Mt. Carmel Sundevils won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Saturday. They took a serious blow against El Capitan, falling 73-27. While losing is never fun, Mt. Carmel can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 815th, while El Capitan is ranked 357th).
Despite the loss, Mt. Carmel still got an impressive performance from Grace Weede, who scored 13 points along with two steals. Weede is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played.
Mt. Carmel struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as El Capitan racked up 24 assists.
It was another big night for Keira Heinricy, who scored 29 points along with two steals for El Capitan. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Heinricy has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Emily Sample, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds and five assists.
Mt. Carmel's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 6-14. As for El Capitan, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 13-9.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mt. Carmel will take on Fallbrook at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for El Capitan, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on Monte Vista at 5:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Monte Vista is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
