Basketball Recap: Costa Mesa Triumphs

Costa Mesa won the last time they faced Mission Viejo and things went their way on Wednesday too. The Costa Mesa Mustangs pulled ahead with a 41-40 photo finish over the Mission Viejo Diablos. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.

Costa Mesa got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Leilani Quero out in front who posted 17 points and three steals. Quero has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last seven times she's played. Aaliyah Terry was another key player, dropping a double-double on ten points and ten boards.

Costa Mesa smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in four consecutive contests.

Mission Viejo's loss came despite strong showings from Sofia Gozzo and Savanna Whitesides. Gozzo dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 boards, while Whitesides had seven points and 19 rebounds. Mission Viejo is 4-2 when Whitesides posts ten or more boards, but 1-4 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Kimora Williams, who put up ten points and eight boards.

The victory got Costa Mesa back to even at 3-3. As for Mission Viejo, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-6.

Costa Mesa didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 61-42 win against Estancia on the 12th. As for Mission Viejo, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 55-39 victory against Rancho Alamitos on the 12th.
