The Ventura Cougars waltzed into their matchup Tuesday with four straight wins but they left with five. The stars were shining brightly for them in a 60-42 win over San Marcos. Given Ventura's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 27th, while San Marcos is ranked 233rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Ventura to victory were Skyler Knight and Kailee Staniland. Knight scored 16 points along with four steals, while Staniland scored 23 points along with seven assists and six rebounds. The contest was Staniland's eighth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jasmine Moore, who scored seven points along with ten rebounds.
Ventura pushed their record up to 8-2 with that win, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season. They've been dominating during the matches in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 29.08 points. As for San Marcos, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-5.
Ventura and Flagstaff will round out the year against one another at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at. Flagstaff knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three games -- so hopefully Ventura likes a good challenge. San Marcos will be home for the holidays to greet Camarillo at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
